Gately is coming out of the gates hard, calling his opponent to the floor over support from unions. The Cranston Teachers Alliance and other teachers unions grace Lanzi’s list of contributors. “She’s going to out-raise me by three to one, but nobody will ever outwork me,” Gately said. “There’s no ignoring me.” She defended the contributions, saying she does not feel it influences her votes. “We receive contributions from a variety of sources,” she said. “All you have to do is look at my service and my record of accomplishments to know that I’ve worked well with all my constituents.” ……“There’s no basis in his accusations,” she said. “

Tillinghast’s arrest also came as a surprise in Cranston, where he has served on the city Board of Contract and Purchase since 2003.
Councilwoman Paula McFarland initially appointed Tillinghast to the board, which has the power to approve millions of dollars in purchases for the city, ranging from supplies to building repairs. McFarland said that Tillinghast was recommended by Langevin’s office as well as a Cranston state senator, Beatrice Lanzi, on whose campaign he had volunteered.
“It surprised me when I read that he might have been involved in some sort of union kickback scheme,” said McFarland. “Ethically, you want people you appoint to public boards to uphold the highest ethical standards.”

“High local and state taxes have battered Rhode Island businesses, driving out jobs and thus crimping tax revenues. With fuel and food prices going through the roof, and jobs disappearing at an alarming rate, politicians seem to be getting the point that hiking taxes in this election year might not be such a good idea after all. Public-employee unions, meanwhile, are unhappy.
The General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to close a $168 million estimated deficit in this year’s bloated state budget by trimming spending rather than raising taxes. It mostly went along with the recommendations of Governor Carcieri. House Speaker William Murphy and Finance Committee Chairman Steven Costantino were the key leaders in holding the line……
The Senate Finance Committee almost derailed the effort to curb the overspending. Voting against a return to reason were Senators Frank Ciccone, Hanna Gallo, Beatrice Lanzi, Paul Moura, Juan Pichardo and Dominick Ruggerio.
Senators Ciccone, Moura and Ruggerio all work directly for organized labor, and Senator Lanzi is the director of “labor community services” for the United Way of Rhode Island….. Senate President Joseph Montalbano and Majority Leader Teresa Paiva Weed came to the rescue and kept the budget from being derailed, defeating legislators who put their personal interests ahead of those of the mass of their constituents.”
Over objections, panel OKs plan that cuts aid, programs Thursday, May 1, 2008

“PROVIDENCE — Over the strong objection of labor unions, a key Senate committee last night narrowly endorsed a package of spending cuts to help balance a current-year state budget deficit of at least $168 million……. The opponents were Senators Frank A. Ciccone III, Hanna M. Gallo, Beatrice A. Lanzi, Paul E. Moura, Juan M. Pichardo and Dominick J. Ruggerio.
For the past 18 years, my opponent, Bea Lanzi, has led and voted for the failed policies that have directly contributed to record unemployment, the highest taxes in the country, the worst climate for small businesses and brought Rhode Island to the verge of economic collapse.
Do you want a Senator that represents your interests or special interests?
- 79% of her campaign funding comes from labor PAC'S
- She voted to have Day Care Workers Unionized
- She is paid over $61,485 a year as the "Union Labor Relations Director" for the United Way
- After 16+ years of voting against contributing 10% towards her HealthCare, she is finally paying.
She accepts campaign funding from:
- Connecticut Health Care Union PAC 1199
- Connecticut Laborers Political League
- Massachusetts Laborers District Council PAC
I wonder what out-of-state Unions have to do with Cranston and all of Rhode Island?
Last election she wasn't planning on running again.
